The byway runs south from WaKeeney on highway 283 and Ogallah, highway 47 to Cedar Bluff State Park. In the spring, the roadsides are alive with wildflowers. In the summer, Cedar Bluff Reservoir offer a cool respite. Enjoy fall colors as the native grasses and trees take on their autumn hues. The kiosk panel at the Wilcox School tells about the region and the history of the building. Take a side trip to Castle Rock and view Wildcat Canyon along the way.
The byway is very special during the holidays. WaKeeney is called the “Christmas City of the High Plains”. Santa flips on the switch on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and the area around the Trego County Courthouse lights up through January 1st. Experience history at the park’s Threshing Machine Canyon and the Trego County Museum. Museum exhibits include a Trego County history mural and the Purinton Collection of fossils and Western memorabilia. Taste premium wine grown from their own vines at Shiloh Vineyard south of the Voda exit (120).
